How long at current position: 5 1/2 years

1) What is your role in your job and what are some typical duties? In-home health assessments, venipuncture, cardiograms.


2) Have you had to do any additional education in order to do what you are doing? Yes, I completed the venipuncture/IV therapy course, an EKG program and had completed the Head to Toe Physical Assessment course.


3) What are your usual hours of work and do you work overtime? Usually 0800-1800 Monday to Friday, Saturdays until 1200 but modify my hours to meet the client and agency needs.


4) What made you apply for this job? I wanted to seek a position that was less physically demanding and more mentally stimulating.


5) What makes your job unique from others? I am self directed, written information determines client outcomes so I must be extremely medically specific.


6) Are you part of an interdisciplinary team?  If so, what other professions do you work and consult with? Yes, I work and consult with a team of RN's, case coordinators, insurance agents and on occassion physicians.

7) What do you like most about your job?  Least? I like the independence I have with this position. I am dealing with the public of all natures, constantly challenged to maintain a professional demeanor.


8) Share a workplace story of interest. Being able to frequently remove previous existing fears from clients with needle phobias and have developed a very good expertise with clients.


9) What motivates or inspires you in your nursing career?  It allows me to be autonomous and self directed while relying on my previous experience with nursing teams.


10) What are your long term goals in your nursing career? I have been nursing for 35 years ans am drawing close to the end of my career. This position allows me to continue learning and blend all of my previous nursing experiences.


11) Are you a member of any workplace or LPN organizations?  If so, what are they and why did you join them? Just HEU.


12) What to you think the role of the LPN will look like in 5 years? The role of the LPN in BC has changed even since I relocated to BC from Winnipeg,MB 5 1/2 years ago. I can see it expanding as the role becomes more diverse and stronger with more skills.

Additional Comments

There are positions in all facets of nursing available and one need not work rotating shifts in hospital facilities for the rest of a career unless it is a personal choice.
