What is your role in your job and what are some typical duties? My role as an LPN at Rch are assessing patients and reporting any changes to RN’s or dr’s, carrying a full work load of patients, providing bedside care for all patients, full scope pharmacology, checking mar’s, charting, changing dressings and discontinuing drains as per dr orders, catheterizations, changing IV’s according to my scope of practice, providing pre-op instructions and advocating for all patients.
Have you had to do any additional education in order to do what you are doing? I have attended Neurosciences Education sessions provided by the CNE on the floor.
What are your usual hours of work and do you work overtime? My usual hours of work are 7pm to 7am, 12 hour shifts and I choose to do nights only, due to having a child and it works out great. I also work overtime.
What made you apply for this job? I have always wanted to work one to one with patients and provide bedside nursing care and Neruo allows me to learn everyday and my skills are up to date.
Are you part of an interdisciplinary team? If so, what other professions do you work and consult with? Yes, I work with RN’s, OT’s, PT’s, Doctor’s, Pharmacy and we all work together as a team.
What do you like most about your job? Least? I love my job on Neuro, I am able to learn so much everyday and provide nursing care to the best of my ability. I have had the opportunity to have worked with the best nursing team and we all collaborate together and work as a team. I also find my job very rewarding when a patient has walked out in full recovery and I have been appreciated. I never stop learning and that is what keeps nursing so interesting.
What motivates or inspires you in your nursing career? My main inspiration is seeing my patients get better and walking out of the hospital well. My family has also inspired me in many ways and working with the best colleagues has made my nursing career eventful. There are times when the stress level on the floor has hit the roof, but we all manage to work together and make the best of all situations.
What are your long term goals in your nursing career? My long term nursing goals are to never stop learning and in due time to get my degree in nursing.

Becoming an LPN was the best decision that I ever made, I have learned so much in such a short period of time and will continue learning. The continuation of learning is what makes my job so much more interesting, I am never bored. My career as an LPN so far has been so rewarding, and I do feel recognized as a nurse. As and LPN you have so many opportunities grow as a person and as a nurse.
